Lyle's flying fox

Lyle's flying fox (Pteropus lylei) is the largest bat species. Also called fruit bat, flying fox, or flying dog.

It occurs in India and Ceylon, living in colonies and spending its days hanging “head down” from trees. Has an impressive wingspan of up to 170 cm, with a small body length – 32 cm. What is interesting is that it is the only bat species with no sense of echolocation, hence it cannot fly in total darkness. However, nature has rewarded it with great sense of hearing and sight.

It is frugivore!

In our zoo an entire colony of flying foxes live under the roof of Madagascar pavilion, surrounded by flora and fauna of this unique island, for example brown lemurs or the alaotra reed lemurs..
